What type of jobs do women of China hold today? It is interesting to discover that Chinese women today are successful career women. Choo Chang, for example, is a manageress of one of China's largest telecommunication companies, while Soo Hoon is also a manageress of a large food-chain restaurant. Recently, both these personalities were awarded the best woman entrepreneur award in China. Another successful personality is Wan Hai, a renowned scientist who works in China's space programme. And the list goes on. One thing they all have in common is that they all belong to the female gender. According to Shan Thoi, the Minister of Human Resource Development, women are now the most important assets to the country. He claims the government also believes this. He says that China really needs educated women to help advance the country further.

This was not the case 60 years ago. Then, there were very few women holding important posts. Women worked mostly at home or in factories. Now, more than 50 million women are working in China and this constitutes nearly 50% of the workforce. It is estimated that 35 000 women are scientists and technical workers and a small number hold important government posts as governors or ministers while some 8 million others are engineers, chemists, and biologists.

It has not been easy for these women, says Shan Thoi. He believes that Chinese women have had to endure more difficulties than Chinese men. Women still have to take care of their families besides working. That means they really hold two jobs, one at their office or factory and the other at home. This is the same problem encountered by women in many parts of the world.

Having realised the importance of women to the economy of China, the government of China is trying to create better working conditions for women. More day-care centres are being set up for the children of working mothers. Women are also helped in getting better education and in getting better jobs. According to Shan Thoi, if these steps are successfully implemented, the future of women in China should even be better.
