We, the residents of Taman Cempaka, Kuala
Kangsar, wish to draw to your attention a number
of matters which need immediate attention in our
neighborhood. First, a section of the road
shoulder leading to the market, which has
collapsed for over a month, has not been
attended to. Several mishaps involving
pedestrians and motorists have occurred along
this stretch of Jalan Pasar. In an incident
which happened two days ago, an elderly man
slipped and fell when the earth under his feet
suddenly gave way. Fortunately, he only
sustained a few bruises. We certainly can't
imagine what might have happened if a pregnant
lady had been in his shoes.
Secondly, part of the market floor near the
fish stalls caves in repeatedly. This again
poses a hazard to both traders and shoppers.
According to some fishmongers, many complaints
have been made to the Kuala Kangsar Municipal
Council. All that the council did after each
complaint was to fill up the hole with some
pebbles and
sand. They voiced out that this temporary
remedial measure is not good enough as the
traffic in this section of the market is heavy
and the uneven floor has made it difficult for
the traders to push their cartloads of fish
across the floor when they start their business
every morning. Then, after every three months or
so, that particular section sinks again. This
has happened a number of times. what they wish
for is a long-term measure to rectify the
problem. they do not mind being relocated to
another section of the market while remedial
work is being done.
Finally, we wish to draw your attention to
the increasing number of beggars in the vicinity
of the market. The shoppers feel harassed at
every corner of the market as some of these
beggars boldly confront them. These beggars can
become violent or they may even hurl verbal
abuse at the shoppers when
they refuse to
part with their money. Something needs to be
done fast before these beggars chase away all
the people from the market.
