Harry's mother was very ill. She had been in and out of hospitals for the past
six months. At first, the doctors could not figure out what was wrong with her.
They tested her for common diseases but the results all turned out negative.
Finally, one doctor diagnosed her with cancer. The family reeled in shock when
they heard this. Everyone was in denial.
They sought two other doctors' opinions and both of them confirmed the
diagnosis. Finally, it was Harry's mother herself who pulled herself together
and faced the truth. The family saw how strong she was and learnt from her.
Last week, Harry's mother collapsed at home in severe pain. She was in agony as
spasms of pain rippled through her. His father immediately called for an
ambulance. She was sent to the nearest hospital and underwent emergency surgery.
The family rushed to the hospital and waited anxiously. The surgery took nearly
five hours. Finally, a doctor in scrubs came out of the operating theater. The
family saw his grim face and their hearts sank. The doctor explained that he had
removed as much of the tumor as he possibly could. However, there were certain
parts that were too difficult to remove. The family did not know to react to
this piece of information. On one hand, they were relieved that she was alive.
On the other hand, they were disappointed that the surgery was not a complete
success.
When Harry first set eyes on his mother on the hospital bed, his initial
reaction was one of shock. She looked so frail and helpless. She had tubes to
help her breathe better and there was a drip for her painkillers. The family
felt heartbroken to see her in that state.
Over the next three months, Harry's underwent intensive treatment to fight
the disease. It was not easy but she was very strong-willed. She refused to let
her illness get her down. Her positive attitude affected the rest of the family
and they all were very supportive of her. Harry's father would accompany her for
each and every of her medical checkups. Every family member pitched in with the
housework so that she need not do anything. It made them stronger and more
united. However, everyone harbored an unsaid fear of her medical condition
worsening. |
