Read the passage carefully. Then choose the correct answer.

Ai Ling woke up even before her alarm clock rang. She could not sleep any more, so she got up to get ready for school. She was taking her Chinese oral examination today. Chinese had never been her strongest subject so she was feeling very jittery about it.

When Ai Ling came down for breakfast, her mother was surprised to see her up already. Usually, she had to call her repeatedly to wake her up. As Ai Ling sat at the dining table having her breakfast, she was exceptionally quiet, unlike her usual bubbly self. her mother thought she was ill and felt her forehead. Ai Ling quickly finished up her food and took out her notes to revise while waiting for the school bus to arrive. She mumbled to herself as she memorized the phrases in her notes. She was like a monk chanting prayers in a temple. her mother decided to leave her alone to study.

When Ai Ling arrived in school, she reported to her teacher in her classroom. Attendance was taken and she took her seat at the back of the classroom. She wanted to be left alone to revise her work. Over the next half an hour, more of her classmates started streaming in. Initially, many of them looked relaxed. However, when the examination actually began, they started to tense up.

When it was finally Ai Ling's turn, she took a deep breath and tried not to be too nervous. She tried to maintain her focus and appear calm. The examiners looked pleasant enough. They smiled at her when she greeted them. Throughout the examination, they would respond in kind to her answers. Before she knew it, it was over. She thanked the examiners and walked out of the room. The moment she was alone, she let out a deep breath as if she had been holding it in the whole time. She thought that it went rather well and was a little more relaxed after that.

That afternoon, Ai Ling went home and told her mother all about the examination. Her mother was glad that it had gone well for her. She made Ai Ling's favorite food for lunch -- spaghetti with meatballs. That lifted Ai Ling's spirits and she was very grateful to her mother for being so considerate. Now that the examination was over, Ai Ling's appetite improved and she gobbled up every morsel of her delicious lunch.
