Mrs Tan was feeling a lot of stress because her son's examination was
approaching. This was his first major national examination and they both did not
know what to expect. Tom's weakest subject was Chinese. So, for the past half a
year, his mother had engaged a private tutor to give him supplementary lessons
to brush up on his Chinese. Tom, on the other hand, was not showing any interest
in the subject. He thought that the extra lessons would not be beneficial to his
grades at all. Hence, he did not put in much effort into the lessons. One day
after Tom's Chinese lesson, his tutor spoke to Mrs Tan. She voiced her concern
that Tom was displaying a callous attitude to his work. She complained of his
haphazard work and his nonchalant attitude. She was worried that at this rate
that he was going, he might even fail his Chinese examination. This piece of
news was very shocking for Mrs Tan. She had no idea that the situation was
deteriorating so badly. She told the tutor that she would have a word with Tom
about it.
That evening, both Mr and Mrs Tan sat down with Tom and talked to him. They
wanted to know why his attitude was so bad. They tried not to scold him but
instead, talked to him reasonably. Initially, Tom refused to say anything. Then,
he slowly revealed to them he did not understand his lessons. He said that the
tutor's pace of lesson was too fast for him. Mrs Tan then advised him to speak
up if that should happen again so that his
tutor could slow down. In addition, Mrs Tan would let his tutor know that she
needed to slow down her lessons a little.
After that heart-to-heart discussion with Tom, the situation improved. His
tutor taught him at a pace that was comfortable to him and he in turn, would
speak up and ask questions whenever he was in doubt.
By the time Tom sat for his examination, he was feeling more confident in the
subject. When his results were released, he was relieved as he had improved
tremendously in Chinese. Both his parents as well as his tutor were very proud
of his achievements. It goes to show that with a little effort, all things are
possible. |
