My definition of a fulfilling life

When contemplating my idea of a fulfilling life, initially my thoughts are centered around financial stability. The ability to acquire an opulent abode for my family members, a stylish motor vehicle, lavish clothing, and all the latest consumer goods to meet our desires. Additionally, the luxury of ample funds for foreign travel and a superior education. However, upon further reflection, I realize that money cannot provide happiness on its own.

Many of the world's wealthiest individuals serve as testament to this. Barbara Hutton, the Woolworth heiress, for instance, lived a miserable existence despite her abundant riches. Numerous other affluent people have lived in greater unhappiness than those who struggle to make ends meet. The essential components of a joyful life cannot be purchased with money. Good health, for instance, is priceless and its value is only fully realized when in danger of losing it. Although individuals who face health challenges often overcome them and find happiness, they would still concur that a healthy body would be preferable.

As a social being, I find human connection and love to be fundamental to my happiness. Ever since childhood, the love and affection from my parents and siblings, as well as the camaraderie of my uncles, aunts, school friends, has greatly contributed to my well-being. As I have matured, I have come to appreciate the importance of finding a partner who shares in life's joys and tribulations, and who provides a warm and welcoming domestic environment. While I have transitioned from childhood friends to adult companions, my life remains surrounded by love and friendship, which I believe are imperative for a content life.

I am currently pursuing a law degree at the university and have always been fascinated by this field. My aspiration since childhood has been to become a solicitor and return to my hometown to serve the community. Doing an interesting and meaningful job that engages one's full attention and allows for the expression of one's abilities is a crucial component of happiness.

I am also a sports enthusiast and my idea of a fulfilling life encompasses the time and resources to engage in activities such as basketball and swimming. Reading, leisure pursuits, and hobbies are also important to me, as is participating in public life. This may take the form of serving on my Residents' Committee or being active in my local church.

My religious beliefs also play a significant role in my happiness, and it is crucial for me to live in a country where I can freely practice my faith. Singapore is an exemplary model of this, where people of diverse cultural backgrounds coexist peacefully and are tolerant of one another. Unfortunately, not every country affords such freedoms, and the loss of freedom of speech and action can be detrimental to one's happiness.

Happiness is often referred to as the most illusive and evasive of all human experiences. Cynics have even quipped that happiness can only be found in death. However, the majority of us experience more happiness than sadness in our lives. The key to happiness, perhaps, lies in prioritizing the right things, putting forth effort, and giving more than we receive, ultimately leading to a fulfilling life.
