Dear Kenny It was wonderful to hear from you after all this time. You must be
feeling rather relieved now that the SPM is over. I know that you studied very
hard. It must be great to be able to put your school books aside and
engage in other activities for a change.
You mentioned in your letter that you are not sure what to do now that the exams
are over. You seem to be planning to take up a job. It might be a good idea but
only if it is a temporary job. You will gain much useful experience and earn
some pocket money. That is a good thing.
However, I do not think you should take up a permanent job even if you are
offered one. I realize the offer may be attractive and will certainly be hard to
turn down. Nevertheless, you should resist
the temptation and work only on a temporary basis. You still have a lot of
studying to do. You need to go to college and then on to university. You should
ensure that you get a diploma or better still, a degree. That way you will be
better qualified to hold a respectable position and earn a higher salary. With
good qualifications your job prospects will be better. You will have a wider
variety of jobs to choose from. Besides, your chances of promotion will be much
better if you are well qualified.
I know you are in a hurry to get a job and earn money but you should not rush.
It is more important to further your studies. Studying for a degree teaches you
discipline, helps train your mind and equips you with essential skills. You
learn how to work independently and also with others. You will learn how to
carry out research for projects, and get information from various sources. Such
training is invaluable.
Please do not think you have done all the studying you need to do in order to
survive in this world. There is still a lot more to do. While in school you tend
to be spoon-fed. There are many more exciting things in store for you when you
continue your studies. The scope of study will be much greater and more
challenging. You should not deprive yourself
of the experience by rushing into the world of work. Stay a student for a little
longer. Give yourself time to mature and in the process, to discover and learn
about yourself. I hope you will give this matter some serious thought.
Yours, |
