It was time to go to school again and Helen despised
it. There was no one in school she could talk to or play with during recess. She
was never happy and preferred to stay at home instead. However, even at home,
she was dreary from being alone. Helen was
an only child and her parents left her to care for herself during the day when
they worked. Sometimes, she thought that nobody cared or loved her. The only
thing she ever looked forward to was a visit from her grandmother, which was not
often. Helen dragged her heavy feet to school where she sat solemnly in class,
listening to her teacher. What she did not know was that a classmate of hers,
Natasha, had been observing her for weeks. That recess, Natasha approached Helen
and offered her some sweets. "Why are you always so
glum ?" Natasha's soft voice reached out to Helen. Helen poured out
her frustrations. Natasha sat listening with quiet attention. The story Helen
was telling sounded so much like hers. When Helen was done talking, she told
Helen that she knew what it was like being lonely because she too was an only
child with working parents.
Helen was glad to know that Natasha cared for her so much and she was
touched. the girls talked to each other every day from then on and became good
friends. Both Helen and Natasha smile more often now. They really enjoy each
other's company |
