Once, there was a man by the name of Mr Richard. Mr Richard suspected that his wife was going deaf. There was a number of occasions when his wife gave no replies when Mr Richard asked her questions. Recently, the number of times which she had kept silent when Mr Richard talked to her had increased.

One peaceful Sunday evening, Mr Richard was washing his car at the car porch while his wife was in the kitchen preparing the evening meal. It was then that he decided to test whether his wife was really going deaf.

"Is dinner ready, dear?" he called. His wife continued to wash the vegetables without saying a word.

Mr Richard was beginning to get a little worried.

"Is dinner ready, dear?" he said in a louder voice. Again, there was no answer from his wife. Mr Richard's alarm grew. He decided to try one more time.

"Is dinner ready?" he shouted.

Once again, his wife ignored his question and began peeling the potatoes. By now, Mr Richard was convinced that his wife was indeed going deaf. He marched into the kitchen and said:

"Nancy, .I think there's something wrong with your hearing. Why didn't you answer me when I asked you whether dinner is ready?"

Nancy looked up from her work.

"But I did answer you," she protested. "I said 'Not yet, dear!' loudly - three times!"
