The Mass Rapid Transit started operation in November 1987. Singaporeans were filled with excitement as they crowded into the trains for the first time. It was not uncommon then to see whole families comprising the young and the old, riding from one end of the line to the other and back.

Today, the initial novelty of the MRT has worn off. Many people use the MRT as it is an efficient form of transport, which spares one from traffic jams, especially during peak hours. It also provides air-conditioned comfort at reasonable fares. With the introduction of the Transitlink system, the MRT and the Singapore Bus Service users can now use one ticket for both systems. This makes it even more convenient to travel on the train.

The Transitlink system also represents a joint effort by the MRT and SBS to integrate different forms of land transport in Singapore for more efficient travel. Perhaps, one day, traffic jams will become a thing of the past as the traffic on the road becomes increasingly controlled.
