His father was always in debt, and when Charles was twelve, his father was sent  to prison for failing to pay his debts. Young Charles had to work in a dismal factory. This terrible experience continued to haunt him even after he attained success with his novels. David Copperfield is the story of Dickens' own life when he worked in the factory. Another character in the novel, Mr. Micawber, is a portrayal of Dickens' own father, who was an incorrigible spendthrift.

Because of his humble background, Dickens never forgot what it was like to be poor. He was always concerned for the orphaned and the destitute.
