The baboon is the largest and fiercest member of the monkey family. It is found in the grassland and mountainous areas of the Sahara. It is rarely found in the forests. Though sociable by nature, baboons have been known to fight violently among themselves, especially between the male baboons, over who gets the female baboons. The fights can get so violent that young baboons have been trampled to death.

Baboons will eat almost anything. A troop of baboons on the hunt/search for food will tear apart tree stumps for insects, rob orchards and even invade farmhouses. With their long dog-like faces, sharp canine teeth and restless disposition, it is not surprising that they are often thought of as the most dangerous and aggressive of all monkeys.

Today, baboons can be bred successfully in zoos. The next time you go to the zoo, watch out for the Arabian baboon. It is easy to recognize it because its bottom is bright red. The Egyptians used to worship the Arabian baboon and this is the reason it is also called the sacred baboon.
