It was past midnight. We were walking along the beach enjoying the cool sea breeze. Then one of us spotted what we had come to look for. Out of the sea came a giant leatherback turtle, crawling slowly onto the beach. It had a great hard shell upon its back and used its huge flippers to move about effortlessly.

The turtle reached the middle of the beach and began digging away at the sand. Large scoops of sand were flung everywhere as the turtle worked in deep concentration, oblivious to our prying eyes. When a deep hole had been dug, the turtle settled over it for ten minutes. As it got up, it began covering the hole with sand again.

In the bright moonlight, we could see numerous round, white eggs. In a month's time, tiny turtles will hatch from them. These baby turtles would all crawl to the sea as if guided by instinct and swim away. When they reach adulthood, they too would return to this spot to lay their eggs.
