The expression 'Achilles' heel' means 'a person's weakest part'. Such an expression has its origins in ancient Greece. Long ago there was a handsome, young warrior named Achilles. He was a very brave warrior who fought valiantly for the Greeks during/in the Trojan war. Achilles rose from the ranks quickly and became one of the best warriors in the Greek army. As a soldier, Achilles seemed invincible because he could not be injured by his enemies at all.

Achilles's secret was that when he was a baby, his mother had immersed him in the waters of the River Styx. The magical power of the water protected him from any sort of injury he would come across later in life.

However, there was one part of Achilles's body that was not protected - his heel. His mother had overlooked this; she had held him by his heel when she soaked him in the river. This weakness was to become Achilles's downfall. One day, in a fierce battle, Achilles killed a Trojan hero called Hector. In retaliation, Hector's brother shot a deadly arrow at Achilles's heel. As a result, Achilles died from the poison in the arrow.
