Whenever you go trekking or walking through a marsh, remember to watch out for leeches. Leeches look like earthworms but they are a nuisance. They cling onto the body of a human being or an animal and suck blood from it. Although it sounds horrible, it does not really hurt to be bitten by a leech. The leech usually drops off by itself after it has had its fill. In the past, leeches were used as a medical tool to suck out poison from the blood !

You should not try to pluck off the leech from your body before it has finished feeding. This is because the leech secretes a liquid from its mouth which stops/prevents your blood from clotting while it is in the process of sucking the blood. This means that you will probably bleed for a while if you interrupt a leech at its meal.

However, if you happen to carry/have a packet of salt with you, rub some on the leech. It will let go at once at the smell of salt.
