You are in the middle of a science test. There is total silence in the class. While the others are writing away furiously, you are beginning to feel/get hungry. It is nearly recess time and you are thinking  of how delicious a bowl of laksa in your canteen would taste. Suddenly, without any warning at all, your stomach makes a loud growling sound. Your classmates start to giggle and you nearly die of embarrassment.

Why does your stomach behave that way ? When you are hungry, your stomach begins to secrete digestive juices. The churning of these juices in your stomach is what causes the growling sound. When you eat something to satisfy your hunger, the juices will not churn as there is now something to work on. Thus, the churning of these juices is the stomach's way of alerting you that it is time to eat.

Your brain also plays an important part in informing you that you are hungry. There is  part of the brain called the 'appestat'. Scientists believe that it is this part of the brain that tells your body when you are hungry as well as when to stop eating.
