The rope was tied firmly around a tree, and the object, whatever it was, still remained below the lake's surface. The four men, their hands blistered, found it impossible to use their full strength on the rope. Besides, the muddy shore gave scarcely any foothold. The tree which was not very strong began to bend, showing that the object had slipped slightly back towards the lake bottom.

It was decided that a tractor should be used. One of the men dived in and reported that the taut rope disappeared into a mass of weeds. It was discovered that these weeds were the main cause of the difficulty. Finally, after many more dives, most of the weeds were cut away. A new line, this time a steel hawser, was tied to the object. The tractor winch went into gear, and the slow pull began.

Then, almost unexpectedly, a huge metal segment broke the surface of the lake. As it was drawn into the shallows, the object revealed itself to be an enormous bronze bell, drawing with it a great oozy mass from the dark depths.
