A Miracle Reunion: The Importance of Family for the
Elderly |
|
Indra watched as the old man, Mr. Dev, turned away with tears in his eyes, and
felt a wave of sympathy wash over her. She couldn't help but wonder how children
could abandon their parents so heartlessly. Mr. Dev had been admitted to her
ward, thin and frail, unable to produce his identity card. Despite the
hospital's efforts to contact his family, no one came to visit him. Indra was
angry and upset, knowing that he was too weak to fend for himself once he was
discharged.
Thankfully, the welfare department would take him to an old folks' home, but
Indra couldn't help but feel sorry for him. She had seen how he would clean and
tidy himself every morning, waiting eagerly for his family to visit, only to go
to sleep with tears in his eyes at night. Poh, her colleague, comforted her,
assuring her that the welfare department would take care of him. But Indra knew
that Mr. Dev needed more than that - he needed a miracle.
Two days later, Mr. Dev was deemed fit enough to be discharged, and the welfare
officer arrived to take him to the old folks' home. Indra helped him get ready,
pushing him in a wheelchair to the hospital lobby where the welfare officer was
waiting. As they got into the lift, Indra couldn't help but feel a heavy heart,
knowing how sad the old man must be feeling.
However, as the lift doors opened at the ground level, a miracle happened. A
middle-aged woman rushed forward, calling out "Appa!" and embraced Mr. Dev in
the wheelchair. Both of them began to weep, and Indra smiled through her tears.
She had witnessed the importance of family for the elderly.
Overwhelmed with emotion, Indra left the scene and looked for the welfare
officer. She couldn't wait to tell him the good news that Mr. Dev's trip to the
old folks' home was a wasted one. This reunion had proven to Indra the
significance of family, especially for the elderly who often feel lonely and
abandoned. |
