New Neighbors, New Friends |
|
The house next door had been empty for more than a year. My siblings and I were
curious about who would be moving in, and we did not have long to wait. After a
week of cleaning and painting, a lorry arrived, carrying expensive furniture.
Our new neighbors must be wealthy people, we thought.
Despite our humble appearance, we were excited to make friends with them.
However, our first attempt to introduce ourselves failed miserably when their
mother shooed them into the house after a single glance at us.
Two weeks later, we heard screams coming from next door late at night. Father
and a man from the neighborhood ran over to the house and found the boy and the
girl weeping beside their unconscious mother at the bottom of the staircase
where she had fallen. We called for an ambulance, and Father brought the
children back to our house where they stayed for the night. We learned that
their father was still in Indonesia and would join them soon.
During their stay, we became fast friends with Vin and Nora. We even gave up our
room to make them feel comfortable. By the time they left, we had shaken hands
and agreed to be friends forever. Despite our initial concerns about social
status, we learned that kindness and compassion were the only things that truly
mattered when making new friends. |
