Planned City: Characteristics of Smart City/ Satellite
City/ Modern City |
|
In recent times, many cities in developed countries have been recognized as
smart cities. This is because they want to attract investors and professionals
to invest and work in their countries. As the Malay saying goes, where there is
sugar, there are ants. This development should also be planned and implemented
in Malaysia so that we do not lag behind in achieving global progress. We can
see that more and more skyscrapers are being built in the Kuala Lumpur area such
as the Merdeka 118 Tower and the Tun Razak Exchange Tower. If the Kuala Lumpur
City area is recognized as a modern and smart city, then many foreign investors
will be interested and it will also provide opportunities for local investors to
grow. Therefore, the following are the characteristics of a Smart City or Modern
City in my opinion.
The main characteristic of a smart city is being equipped with the best public
transportation network. It is generally known that cities are areas filled with
human population but lacking in space for something like vehicles. We can see in
Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, that traffic congestion has become a
burdening issue. Residents will waste time facing congestion and it will not
help in terms of smooth economic growth. If the residents in the city area can
move to the location they want in a short time, it will definitely help them to
lead a better life. For example, when they return home after work, they can go
to a restaurant to eat, then to the gym to exercise and watch a movie for
entertainment before going home without worrying about transportation. This
characteristic is important in creating a community that enjoys life in a smart
city.
The second characteristic that needs to be present in a smart city is having the
best Internet access. Every member of society today must have at least one smart
device. Almost all activities done by humans today require Internet access such
as socializing, financial transactions, sending emails, and many more.
Therefore, communication infrastructure needs to be at the best level to provide
Internet coverage to all residents in the city, and most importantly, to
facilitate the business or service affairs of investors who invest in the
country. In addition, the increasingly commercialized 5G development will create
a communication pattern that we have never imagined before. Providing fast and
reliable Internet coverage can convince investors and make a city a modern city.
From another point of view, a smart city should have characteristics of
environmental sustainability. Society previously did not realize that
urbanization and building cities for human and economic development damage our
habitat, Earth. The result is what we face today, where global temperatures are
increasing from year to year, sea levels are rising, and various other natural
disasters are happening. Therefore, to maintain environmental sustainability, a
smart city must be built with careful planning. For example, the use of solar
energy as a source of electricity in buildings or residences where charcoal
burning can be reduced. In addition, better waste management by the community by
practicing recycling can contribute to the sustainability of the city they live
in. In conclusion, a smart city also needs to prioritize its impact on the
surrounding areas and natural resources.
Another criterion that needs to be present in a smart city is having a
university or research and development center. To achieve progress today, humans
conduct research and development through learning. Various facilities and
technologies that are being developed are results of research and development.
Therefore, a smart city should have a university or research and development
center that can produce quality research and development results to facilitate
its progress. With such facilities, the community will have opportunities for
quality education and training, leading to the progress of a smart city. |
