How to Develop Student's Character |
|
Character is a unique and special trait that represents an individual's
personality. It is shaped by the influence of family, religion, and the local
culture in which the individual resides. According to a Malay proverb, "bend the
bamboo while it is still young," which means that shaping something should begin
before it reaches maturity. Therefore, students, especially those in primary
schools, are the target group in developing their character so that they become
useful individuals for themselves, their families, the community, and the
country. If observed, students are a valuable treasure to the country in
general, as they will replace the country's leaders and become the determinants
of the country's success in this era, which challenges the mind and intellect.
Therefore, we should examine and implement ways to develop students' character
to become a better generation than today's.
One of the ways that should be practiced to develop students' character is to
start with parents who show the best example to their children. Education starts
from home, which is a phrase that has become a polemic among parents today, as
children reflect the nature and variety of their parents at home. As the proverb
goes, "where the sauce spills if not on the rice." Therefore, parents have been
entrusted with the responsibility from God when they are given offspring to
educate their children with the best example. For example, if children see their
parents respecting their grandparents, they will undoubtedly follow in their
parents' footsteps to respect the elderly. This value is essential because it
will be accepted by teachers at school, and they will feel at ease teaching
students who are good at respecting their teachers. In conclusion, all the pure
values and examples shown by parents when they are with their children will
shape their character to face their daily routines, whether at school or
elsewhere.
Furthermore, the development of students' character can be carried out by
teachers playing a role in ensuring that students comply with school rules.
Educational institutions such as schools are the buds of society's formation
because the basics of human skills such as reading, arithmetic, and writing are
practiced with other subjects. Therefore, schools need rules so that students
are obedient and easily managed because the number of students is larger than
the number of teachers. With easy-to-understand instructions and appropriate
affirmations, students will surely listen and obey every instruction given by
teachers. For example, teachers give instructions to complete tasks given within
a certain period, and students successfully follow the instructions to complete
the given task. This scenario will shape students who are punctual and listen to
instructions well in completing tasks or school work. Consequently, students
will be exposed to good moral values and noble manners to be implanted within
themselves to be used when they become adults later.
At the same time, students' character can be shaped by introducing effective
educational policies. This is the role of the Ministry of Education in
regulating an effective curriculum with the development of students today. The
latest generation is a tech-savvy generation and depends heavily on gadgets in
their daily activities. To build a progressive country, every industry that
supports the country's economy, especially the education sector, should embrace
technological developments in line with human capabilities' development. Thus,
balanced education between the curriculum in the classroom and outside the
classroom needs to be implemented so that students are more prepared to face
future challenges. |
