Individual Efforts to Cultivate the Habit of Reading

Literacy and the act of reading have a profound impact on one's life and can be the difference between success and failure. Yet, despite the plethora of knowledge at our fingertips and the many resources available, we are still grappling with the challenge of encouraging people, particularly the youth, to embrace the habit of reading. In Malaysia, the average person reads only two books per year compared to their Japanese counterparts, who read significantly more. In order to change this, we need to find ways to make reading an attractive, attractive and enriching experience for all Malaysians.

The first step towards making reading a habit is to encourage frequent visits to libraries. In Malaysia, libraries are not in short supply, and there are various types, such as school libraries, public libraries and mobile libraries. Visiting a library offers a wealth of knowledge and a chance to read and borrow books, allowing individuals to expand their knowledge and understanding of the world. Furthermore, libraries are a great resource for individuals who are looking to deepen their interest in reading, and to explore and discover new books and ideas.

One of the most effective ways to encourage the habit of reading is by creating a comfortable reading environment at home. A home library or reading corner can be established to serve as an oasis for reading, learning and relaxation. The comfort of being at home, surrounded by books and a quiet atmosphere, can provide a conducive environment for reading and learning. The family should be encouraged to explore the library and make use of the books available. This will not only foster a love for reading in the individual but also in their family members.

Another effective way to encourage the habit of reading is by finding books that are appealing and relevant to the individual's interests. Books come in all shapes, sizes, and genres, and the key is to find the right ones to suit one's interests and preferences. Reading a book that piques one's interest is a great way to develop a love for reading. In addition, book clubs and reading groups can provide a platform for people to discuss books and share their thoughts and opinions. These social interactions can increase one's motivation to read and can also serve as a source of encouragement.

In conclusion, cultivating the habit of reading is not only beneficial to the individual but to society as a whole. As young people and students, it is our responsibility to take the initiative and find effective ways to make reading a part of our daily lives. This can be achieved through frequent visits to libraries, creating a reading environment at home, finding books that appeal to our interests and participating in book clubs and reading groups. By making reading a habit, we can enrich our lives, expand our knowledge and become better, more well-rounded individuals.
