Steps to Improve the Quality of National Sports |
|
Sports can be defined as any physical activity that requires energy and is used
for games. Recently, we can see that sports can become an industry that
generates income at both local and global levels. For example, the 2018 World
Cup in Russia generated a profit of 5 billion US dollars from broadcasting
rights and other sources. However, before looking at the potential of sports
globally, is the quality of our national sports at a level that is commendable?
What steps need to be taken to improve the quality of national sports?
The main step in advancing the local sports industry is to ensure that complete
sports infrastructure is provided throughout the country. Basically, every
sports activity requires a playing field such as a field, swimming pool, and
racetrack. Let's look at the areas around us, does each region have enough and
well-maintained swimming pools, fields, and racetracks? If not, then the failure
to provide complete sports infrastructure is a contributing factor to the
stifling of the progress of national sports. If there is no sports
infrastructure that is easily accessible to the community, the search for talent
for athletes is limited. The government or Local Authority (LA) can work with
private companies to ensure that community sports infrastructure is always
improved and maintained. This service not only benefits the local community but
also has the potential to enhance the brand of private companies such as CIMB
Bank that sponsors the national cycling industry.
In addition, the quality of national sports can be improved by exposing the
national athletes to the international level. The Ministry of Education Malaysia
has established the Malaysian Sports School to uncover talent and produce
international-level professional athletes. However, the success rate of these
athletes is seen as unsatisfactory. There are various factors that cause these
athletes to be unsuccessful, one of which is the lack of exposure at the
international level. Exposure at the international level should be started at a
young age so that they do not experience cultural shocks and learn to compete at
competitive levels internationally. Various initiatives have been introduced in
some sports such as the Mohktar Dahari Football Academy, which organizes the
Mokhtar Dahari Cup. Organizing tournaments involving teams from Japan, China,
and Europe can provide valuable experience and learning opportunities to academy
players aged around 13 to 15 years old. Continuous exposure will certainly
improve the performance level of local athletes to match that of international
athletes.
As we know, each sport in our country is overseen by sports associations to
manage athletes and the development of that sport in the country and abroad. But
we often see in the newspaper and television headlines about the corruption of
sports associations that are mainly due to mismanagement of funds and internal
issues. As a result, the focus of these sports associations will be diverted
from the development and improvement of the sport to solving these internal
problems. To avoid this from happening, the government can play a role in
regulating these sports associations to ensure that they are well-managed and
operate transparently. By doing this, the focus of the sports association will
be on the development and improvement of the sport and the quality of national
sports will be improved.
In conclusion, to improve the quality of national sports, complete sports
infrastructure must be provided throughout the country, national athletes must
be exposed to the international level, and the government must regulate sports
associations to ensure they are well-managed and operate transparently. By doing
these three things, the quality of national sports will be improved, and we will
have a sports industry that is worthy of our pride. |
