The Joy of Collecting Stamps and Postcards: A Window to
the Past |
|
I still remember the moment my father called me over to see the beautifully
drawn hornbill stamp on a tiny piece of paper. I was only six years old then,
but that moment sparked my interest in collecting stamps. Now, with three albums
and a range of stamps from around the world, I am proud of my collection.
Although I started with collecting stamps based on their artwork, my collection
grew to include stamps of important personalities such as Queen Elizabeth and
Malaysia's first prime minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman. Stamp collecting has opened
up a window to learning about a country's history, socio-economics, and its
people.
Despite not considering myself a philatelist, collecting stamps has become a
beloved hobby that cheers me up when I'm feeling down. Looking through my albums
sparks joy and nostalgia. Along the way, I also discovered a passion for
collecting postcards, which offer a similar glimpse into the past. My first
postcard was of a funicular train in Penang Hill, and since then, I have been
collecting postcards from all over the world, including vintage postcards of the
seven wonders of the world.
Collecting stamps and postcards requires creativity and an orderly system. My
hobbies have taught me to be neat and systematic, a valuable lesson that I've
learned the hard way after tearing some of my stamps due to impatience and
carelessness.
Nowadays, when my family and friends travel, they know what to get me - a
postcard, please, and if possible, a stamped one. My hobbies have brought me
immense joy, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to discover and learn about
different cultures and histories through the world of stamps and postcards. |
