Effects of Corruption on a Country |
|
Corruption can paralyze the functioning of an organization as fraudulence creeps
into the process. For example, Customs officials who work at the country's
borders receive bribes to release smuggled cheap cigarettes. This situation
arises because they desire a higher incentive due to their low salary and
because they are also cigarette buyers. As a result, we can see that the
organization that should have prevented cigarette smuggling has actually caused
harm to the country by allowing the smugglers to evade taxes, which are the
country's source of income. As the Malay proverb goes, "Harapkan pegar, pegar
makan padi," which means that a person whom we entrust with a task has betrayed
his responsibility in carrying out that task.
Furthermore, if corruption becomes widespread, the administration of the country
as a whole will be affected. All policies and enforcement will become weak. The
implementation of laws cannot be carried out fairly and can bring down the
country's economy in general. For instance, the country's electricity supply
industry is monopolized by a semi-government entity in which there is no
corruption involved, but there are still some shortcomings. Every industry
should be open to all players so that there is competitive rivalry, creating job
opportunities, and driving the country's economy. Therefore, the country's
policymakers should ensure that there is a corruption-free environment not only
at the lower levels but also among multinational companies and players in the
industry so that the country's administration can be managed justly and fairly.
At the same time, corruption will tarnish the image of the country in the eyes
of the world. The advancement of the mass media in obtaining information on all
matters or issues that occur in a country can become the cause of that country's
economic downfall. Therefore, we must always ensure that there are no corruption
cases so that they do not become news for international media in reporting news
to their viewers worldwide. If we are embroiled in corruption issues, the
country will lose interest from foreign investors because they do not believe in
our administration system. When investors are lost, the country's economy will
decline and become sluggish. Therefore, the government together with the
Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) must ensure that every government
employee carries out their tasks with integrity and avoids involvement in
corrupt practices.
Furthermore, the practice of corruption that blinds a person's conscience will
lead to the quality of an infrastructure or program being affected. For example,
in a road construction project, there is corruption involving contractors. They
only pursue profits by accepting projects from the government at the highest
implementation value but, in reality, they construct the road at the lowest cost
to earn more profits. Such a practice causes the road to become damaged in just
one year or less from the date it was built, affecting users and causing waste
at the government level.
