A Moment of Silence |
|
A wave of heat hit, as if the sky had been roasted overnight. The midday of
summer should be quiet, with all things resting in this furnace... and my heart
fell silent along with it.
Rarely do I have such a quiet afternoon, so quiet that I don't want to do
anything or say anything. I just want to be silent, to be silent in this midday,
even if only for a moment. Someone once said that noisy people often don't have
much wisdom, while those with great wisdom often remain silent. Indeed, I am not
a person of great wisdom. I am always so restless, so eager to show off, so
eager to display. I am not the kind of person who can tolerate loneliness. I
yearn for interaction with the outside world, even if I become a tree outside
the fence. I also long for the wind to blow, to ruffle my hair, and to stir my
heart. Those who are unwilling to be lonely and unwilling to be subdued should
also be unable to be silent!
But everything is quiet today. There is no wind to disturb the lake water, no
cicadas chirping, no annoying things, no worrying schoolwork. Be silent, let the
noisy heart be quiet for a moment, and let the thoughts that have nowhere to go
drift away with the wind. The restless atmosphere creates a restless heart, but
now let me leave all troubles behind, and let me be silent for a moment in front
of all things. Don't force me to answer, don't urge me to make a choice, all I
can give right now is silence.
I used to be very afraid of silence. Someone once said that if you don't explode
in silence, you will die in silence. But I am very disdainful of that idea. When
you are silent, just be silent, let go of all attachments, and give your heart
time to rest. We don't need to think about exploding or failing. What we need is
simple and pure silence, silent in words and even more silent in our hearts.
I am not advocating the philosophy of inaction. I just hope that on our journey
of striving, we can give ourselves a chance to be silent and not force ourselves
to make choices every time. |
