From Fisher Folk to Marine Engineer: My Journey to Success |
|
My upbringing was simple and humble, born to a fisher folk family on the island
of Pangkor in 1964. With four older sisters, I was expected to take over the
family business when I came of age. While life was not luxurious, it was
adequate, and I had the opportunity to attend the small Tamil school on the
island, thanks to the visionary headmaster, Encik Dollah, who instilled a love
for learning among the island children.
Despite coming from a lower middle-class family, I excelled in my studies and
found a passion for maths and science. After finishing secondary school, I
pursued my A-levels in Ipoh while working part-time to support myself.
Eventually, I received a place at the National University of Singapore to study
marine engineering.
After graduating, I secured a prestigious position and am currently pursuing a
Master's degree. Looking back on my journey, I am proud of my accomplishments
and grateful for the opportunities that came my way. Today, my family leads a
more comfortable life, and all of my sisters are happily married. I am a living
testament to the power of hard work and perseverance, and I am excited for what
the future holds. |
