Arowanas can live up to sixty years and are believed to come mainly from the rivers in Southern Thailand, Kalimantan, Indonesia and Malaysia. The oldest arowana was said to be initially reared by a grandfather and was last known to be in the possession of his grandson.

There are many myths and beliefs associated with the fish. Stories about how they affected the lives of their owners are constantly being added to the collection of tales. One story told of a businessman who had an appointment to sign a business contract with his friend. They were each to contribute a hundred thousand dollars to set up a company. After days of negotiation, they decided on the date to sign the agreement. However, on that appointed date, the man noticed that his arowana looked ill. He spent time attending to it and missed the appointment. Meanwhile, his friend had found another partner and the man lost that business opportunity. He was disappointed and blamed his arowana for his misfortune.

Three months later, the same man learnt that the company had gone bankrupt. The business had failed. He was glad that he had not signed the contract and he attributed his change of fortune to his fish. It had saved him from losing a hundred thousand dollars.

What he failed to realise was the possibility that the business might have flourished if he had signed and taken over the management. There is an increasing number of people who keep arowanas as a hobby. Some admire their beauty and the vivid colours of their scales while others keep them in the belief that they bring good luck to the family.
