In the midst of a diplomatic dispute between India and Canada, the Canadian High
Commission has announced its intention to "adjust" the number of diplomats
stationed in India due to threats received on social media against its staff.
This dispute arose following accusations from Canada that Indian agents were
involved in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar near Vancouver in June. Canadian
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has urged India to take these allegations
seriously, leading to diplomatic expulsions and a strong denial from India.
Amid escalating tensions, Canada is temporarily modifying its diplomatic
presence in India to ensure the safety of its diplomats. This development
follows the suspension of visa processing for Indian citizens in Canada, as
concerns about safety and hate crimes have
risen.
The situation has strained relations between the two nations, with India
accusing Canada of overlooking radical Sikh nationalist activities. |
