China's Xi Jinping spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the
phone for the first time since the start of Russia's invasion, appealing for
negotiations between the two countries.
Xi said the only way out of the war is through talks and negotiation, saying
China would send a delegation to Ukraine to hold talks on resolving the conflict
with Russia.
China has consistently refused to expand upon how that relates to the
specifics of the Ukraine war, which was triggered when Moscow's forces invaded
their neighbour.
The call was initiated by Kyiv, and Beijing said it is neutral in the
conflict. The call is seen as an effort by China to play a more
prominent role in global diplomacy. |
