People do not only communicate through words, but also by the
use of ___1___, postures,
positions and distances. We may not realize this but body
language is one way we use
___2___ ourselves and also
understand others. Body language has been scientifically studied
over the last 30 years or so and it is said that a person's ___3___
generally has more bearing on communicating his feelings and
attitudes than his words do. It is estimated that less than a
third of our communication ___4___
spoken language. Body language can give us ___5___
to help judge a person, for instance, to tell if he is lying or
telling the truth. Hand-to-face actions, as ___6___
by the 'three wise monkeys' who hear, speak and see no evil,
often indicate deception. When a person sees or hears lies, he
may try to cover his mouth, eyes or ears with his hands. When a
young child is telling a lie, he often covers his mouth with his
hands ___7___
trying to stop the words from coming out. Similarly, when the
child does not want to listen to his parents, who may be
scolding him, he may cover his ears with his hands. Then, if he ___8___,
he may cover his eyes with his hands or arms.
As a person gets older, the hand-to-face gestures become more
refined or ___9___. An adult
may cover his mouth with his hand, pressing the thumb against
his cheek. Some people may use a closed fist or a few fingers
over the mouth. It is possible that the subconscious ___10___
the hand to stop the words that are being said. So, if someone
uses the mouth-guard gesture while speaking to you, it may
indicate that he's telling a lie. |
