I lit a candle and in the flickering light I could see the
dim outlines of the dusty furniture in the hall. "Is anyone at
home ?" I called out. My ___1___
echoed hollowly and my only answer was an even deeper silence.
A rat scurried across my path and I ___2___
in alarm. I was afraid but I had to go on. Holding up the
candle, I walked up the staircase which led to the first floor.

and once or twice my feet went through them and I nearly fell.

led me up those dreadful stairs.
At last I reached the top of the staircase. A narrow corridor
led to the various rooms. The first room was locked. I tried to

The door of the second room was slightly ajar.

There was a bed, a wardrobe and some other furniture. I could
see the indistinct shape of someone lying on the bed. My legs ___8___
and my mouth grew dry, yet I walked up to the bed and pulled
back the sheets. What the flickering light revealed, was a sight
so horrible that even now I shudder to think of it. I had to
bite my tongue ___9___.
The blood drained from my face and my body shook with fear.
I plunged towards the door and bounded the stairs. I had
forgotten about the rotten boards. My feet went through one of

When I opened my eyes I found myself lying on the cement
floor. thank goodness it had been a nightmare. |
