I lit a candle and in the flickering light I could see the
dim outlines of the dusty furniture in the hall. "Is anyone at
home ?" I called out. My ___1___

candle, I walked up the staircase which led to the first floor.

At last I reached the top of the staircase. A narrow corridor

There was a bed, a wardrobe and some other furniture. I could
see the indistinct shape of someone lying on the bed. My legs ___8___
and my mouth grew dry, yet I walked up to the bed and pulled
back the sheets. What the flickering light revealed, was a sight
so horrible that even now I shudder to think of it. I had to

The blood drained from my face and my body shook with fear.
I plunged towards the door and bounded the stairs. I had
forgotten about the rotten boards. My feet went through one of

When I opened my eyes I found myself lying on the cement
floor. thank goodness it had been a nightmare. |
