When my husband waves goodbye for his weekly
football games with his buddies, I cannot help ___1___
wonder why men never grow up. Little girls play
'doctors and nurses' or 'kitchen' when they were
young but when they grow older, many will drop the
games in favor ___2___
other interests, like fashion and movies. However,
boys will still stick to football even when they
turn into men.
I decide to surf the net to find out more ___3___
this game called 'football'. A quick click of the
computer button brings up ___4___
sites with equally interesting stories. I am then
glued for hours in front of the computer screen,
digesting all the information.
It is said that long time ago, the game took the
form of a heated contest ___5___
whole village communities. Any means ___6___
be employed to get the ball to its target with the
exception of murder and manslaughter. ___7___,
it usually turned bloody. There was no maximum
number of players and hence the whole town could
participate in it. Naturally, the side with the most
participants won.
Another click reveals a legend -- ___8___
gory one. The story goes that the game was played
for the very first time with the severed head of a
vanquished Danish prince. The players took delight ___9___
kicking and bouncing the poor prince's head ! All
this information is giving me a headache.
I ___10___
had enough. I switch off my computer and turn to my
husband who has just come back.
"Early today ?" I ask.
"We lost ! We were given so many red cards that
our captain simply lost his head !" he complains.
I smile sweetly and say nothing. |
