Literature was Mac's favorite subject in school.
To him, it was like reading story books,
___1___
more in-depth. He always felt as if he had been
transported ___2___
another realm.
In class, Mac enjoyed having discussions with his
teacher about the themes and characters ___3___
the stories. He was fortunate to have a really
experienced and interesting Literature teacher. She
listened to everyone's opinions and never talked
down to any pupil. She welcomed ___4___
queries and challenges. She did not mind that the
pupils did not always agree ___5___
her interpretation or her ideas. She always told the
class that there was no right or wrong opinion.
Literature was a very subjective subject. Everyone
was entitled to his or her opinion. Sometimes,
discussions would get so heated up that ___6___
became more of a debate ___7___
a discussion. However, such discussions never got
hostile.
Mac's teacher had introduced many genres of
writing. They learnt about novels, short stories and
poems. Mac's favorite theme was racism, especially
in American history. It always fascinated him to
read about the topic. He could never understand ___8___
the people in those days could get away with such
atrocities. His teacher revealed that many years
ago, a similar situation took place in Yugoslavia.
There were even racial riots. Mac was shocked to
learn of this. The society that he lived in now was
one of cohesiveness and unity ___9___
everyone lived harmoniously together and everyone
was treated equally. I was hard to imagine ___10___
different Yugoslavia.
Even the assignments that Mac's teacher gave them
were fun. Sometimes, they would role-play, write
songs or mime scenes from stories. His teacher made
the subject come to life ! |
