The word 'Teddy' (1)
conjures up the picture of cute overstuffed bears that
keep children company. However, have you ever wondered how the
name 'Teddy' came about ? Well, truth be told, it was
(2)
derived from an actual person's name: President
Theodore Roosevelt, affectionately known as 'Teddy'. In 1902,
the President was on a hunting trip and came face to face with a
bear. Although
(3) egged on
to shoot the bear, the kind President refused to and was made a
laughing stock. A newspaper created a cartoon about the
President's refusal but an
(4) ingenious
shopkeeper decided to create stuffed bears and called them
'Teddy Bear' in honor of the kind president.
Well, it seems that the President (5)
had the last laugh as teddy bears can be found in
almost every toy store and in museums, in art shows, in
collectors' trade shows and many other places. They show no
signs of leaving the hearts of children any time soon. |
