Choose the word(s) closest in meaning to the underlined word(s).

Water on earth takes on the (1) multiple forms of oceans, lakes, ponds, and rivers. It can also be found beneath the ground. The cycle of water from its familiar liquid state to vapor and then back to liquid is a never-ending process. However, if it does not end, then why are countries facing water problems ?

The problem is not necessarily the (2) supply of water; rather, the quality of the water itself. Some of our water sources are polluted; the (3) culprits being us. Some areas experience acid rain that destroys rather than nurture, a result of polluted air that (4) subsequently turns the rain acidic. Again, we have only ourselves to blame.

So, in all honesty, all the different countries have to (5) work hand-in-hand, regardless of our beliefs and economic status, to try and save our valuable resource so that we would never come face-to-face with a water shortage.
