I shall never rue this decision. Upon a certain day in late December of the
previous year, I received a telephone call from an unfamiliar number. To my
delight, it turned out to be one of my fellow students. Wasting no time, my
classmate promptly requested that I donate blood. The reason being that the
mother of another classmate required surgery and was in dire need of blood.
Without much contemplation, I consented and promptly set off, making my way
directly to the destination.
Upon arrival, I beheld numerous individuals aboard the blood donation
bus, including familiar classmates and unfamiliar strangers, all
approximately 20 years of age. During the blood donation process, I
ascertained that my blood type was O and discovered that all the other blood
donors shared the same blood type, which is commonly known as the universal
blood type. I felt fortunate, for with this universal blood type, I needn't
worry about compatibility issues when aiding my classmate's mother.
The blood was swiftly donated, and I soon returned to my dwelling. I felt
elated and proud, having performed a virtuous deed by saving someone's life
with my blood. Initially, I held optimistic expectations that events would
unfold as I desired, and my classmate's mother would recover. However,
circumstances did not align with my wishes. Contrary to my hopes, her mother
did not improve and peacefully passed away on the operating table, never to
open her eyes again. She departed this world, forever gone. In that moment,
a profound sorrow consumed me. How could someone depart so easily?
Repeatedly, I asked myself, "Why? How did it come to this? Was everything
I did in vain?" A sense of despair overwhelmed me, and a trace of anger
crept in, believing my blood had been squandered. Yet, as I composed myself
and gathered my thoughts, that sentiment dissipated. I questioned myself,
"If given the opportunity, would I do it again?" And I knew the answer. I
understood that my blood had not been wasted; it had been transfused into
her mother's veins. The act of donating blood does not always guarantee
saving a life. However, without the infusion of blood, wouldn't the person
in need lose even the slightest chance? Hence, I shall never rue this
decision. I afforded someone the opportunity to live, to inhale the
refreshing air of this wondrous world once more. Blood donation, I shall
never regret it.
