Read the following and choose the correct word in brackets.

My father was driving me home from the shops the other day. There was not much traffic on the road except for ( 1. a number of / an amount of ) motorbikes a few yards behind us. Suddenly the ( 2. bigger / biggest ) of the bikes accelerated and tried to get ( 3. past / passed ) us. The rider appeared to have ( 4. lost / loss ) control of his bike and crashed into the back of our car. My father immediately stopped and parked behind a stationery bus ( 5. because of / because ) we were worried that the rider might be seriously injured or even ( 6. died / dead ). We hurried over to the man ( 7. who / whom ) lay motionless on the road. An ambulance quickly arrived and took him to the ( 8. near / nearby ) hospital. A policeman asked to see my father's driving ( 9. license / lesson ) and told us to go to the police station to make a report.

When he went to make the report, he had to wait for quite a while. There was a long queue because a lady was rather slow at writing her report. I haven't ( 10. no / any ) ( 11. practice / practise ) in this sort of thing. 'Can someone help me, please ?' My father then helped her with her report since he ( 12. was used to / used to ) report writing in his job.

The the police officer told me father that the motorbike rider was not seriously injured and that he was going to be charged with dangerous driving and theft. He had apparently stolen the motorbike and was being chased by the other riders ( 13. whose / who's ) friend's bike he had stolen. He was ( 14. all ready / already ) in police custody and would probably spend ( 15. some time / sometimes ) in prison for his crimes.
