Fire expressions

FROM what I have seen, heard and observed, I think finding a good maid is like finding a gem. Some of the stories I have heard about irresponsible maids get me fired up.

Many employers have come under fire for treating their maids harshly or unkindly. However, when you observe the way some of these maids work, you will understand why having them is a real test of your patience and endurance.

Some are lazy, stubborn and incorrigible. They are slipshod in their work and like to cut corners when they are not under supervision. No wonder some of these maids get fired even before their contracts expire.

My friend Joyce had an obedient maid named Jenny. Six months after Jenny had joined her household, Joyce was informed by her back neighbour that jenny had befriended a construction worker. Jenny would meet her boyfriend at the back lane and they would talk for hours when Joyce was out at work. They both got on like a house on fire despite being from different countries.

Joyce did not believe her neighbour as her maid appeared to be shy, quiet and reserved. She decided not to fire from the hip hastily. She trusted her maid so much that she wanted to hold fire until she herself caught jenny red-handed. Then she would warn jenny that she was playing with fire.

One day when Joyce returned from work, she discovered to her horror that jenny had left. She ran to her room only to find that the maid had taken all her belongings. She left behind only some love letters in her drawer.

Filled with great remorse, Joyce wished she had believed her neighbour and acted in time, as there is no smoke without fire.
