A recently released film, directed by Ji Huang and Ryuji Otsuka, follows the
life of a 20-year-old flight attendant trainee named Lynn who unexpectedly
becomes pregnant in a society that views her as a project and a pawn due to
China's one-child policy, which still haunts the nation's citizens.
The film's depiction of Lynn's world is marked by stillness and distance,
highlighting her speck-on-the-radar existence. Honggui Yao's down-to-earth
portrayal of Lynn, with her timidity and persistence, is what sustains the
film's lure through its runtime.
The movie explores the social entrapment
of commodified womanhood and presents an examination of female stagnancy,
personally and politically, in modern China.
The script's restraint etches a character with true history, and the film's
sense of suspense is striking and human as we worry for Lynn and root for her to
find her power. |
