Unwelcome is a film that blends Irish mythology with modernism, featuring tiny
and bloodthirsty fae called far darrig or redcaps. The plot revolves around a
couple, Maya and Jamie, who are forced to flee their London neighborhood after a
traumatic home invasion.
They move to rural Ireland, where they must deal with both human and fae
threats, including the Whelan family, who are patching their roof. While the
film has commendable visual effects and practical techniques that bring the fae
to life, it struggles to find a consistent tone and leaves some of its more
interesting plot threads underdeveloped.
The intense home invasion and menacing Whelan behavior keep the tone hovering
around foreboding and serious until the
third act, where the film dramatically shifts into a horror-comedy that begs the
question of where this welcome energy was all along. |
