Set on an island off the coast of Cornwall in 1973, a wildlife volunteer
observes a rare flower on a cliff and interacts with a young woman
apparition and a Bronze Age standing stone.
Running low on supplies, she anxiously awaits a boatman's arrival.
As events spiral out of chronological order, she sees crowds of long-gone
residents, each revealing unexpected emotions and unsettling challenges. With
minimal dialog, the lead actress carries the film through her subtle yet graphic
reactions, revealing her surprise and terror at the inexplicable events.
Jenkins' decision to eschew obvious plotting allows for bigger themes to
emerge, exploring the tension between humanity and nature. This elemental film
may not appeal to fans of obvious storytelling, but those who go with it will be
chilled to the bone and have fun along the way. |
