The film features an outstanding element, which is the background music with an
opera tune that suddenly sounds in the solemn atmosphere, accompanied by some
rapper-style lyrics. It is interspersed
almost every time between different scenes and gives people a boost from a
sensory perspective, preparing for the laying and reversal of the next scene. It
has a very contrasting style characteristic of Zhang Yimou. Do not think the
movie is over when the cast and crew's subtitles appear. The script is being
twisted and turned by screenwriter to the extent some viewers may be numb from
one reversal after another. Many times you guess there will be a reversal, it
fails you. It's a suffocating sensation that leaves you gasping for air.
What's more rare is that Zhang Yimou, as a well-established and successful
director, has been constantly challenging some new themes that he has never
tried in recent years in the movies he has directed, but you can also see the
features he is good at and persists in the film. For example:- This film starts
from midnight and ends with the sunrise of dawn. The overall tone of the film
transitions from a gloomy gray-blue to a warm bright yellow, which perfectly
matches the story from layer upon layer of conspiracy to finally clearing up.
The emotions of the characters and the audience also go from solemn to tragic
and finally to brightness at dawn. This kind of atmosphere throughout the whole
film, which is coordinated through the overall color, is not something that
ordinary directors can grasp and use with ease. |
