A Dilemma of Conscience

Wayne felt a sudden tap on his shoulder, causing him to jump. He turned around and saw Harold, who had a sinister smile on his face.

"What are you doing?" Harold asked, his eyes shifting from John's open bag to Wayne's guilty face.

"I...I..." Wayne stuttered, searching for an answer.

Harold continued, "Well, what are you doing with John's bag?"

Taken aback by the question, Wayne looked up in shock, but no words came out of his dry, parched throat. Harold smiled wryly and said, "Well, I won't tell anyone what I have just seen... But you will have to do as I say."

Wayne hesitated for a moment before reluctantly agreeing. Harold gave a look of smug satisfaction before walking away, leaving Wayne holding John's mobile phone in his limp hand.

When the class returned from recess, John noticed that his phone was missing. Wayne froze and looked apprehensively at Harold, who returned his gaze with a smirk. Harold then turned to John and said, "On my way back, I saw two boys from another class running out of this room. I'm not sure if they could be the culprits."

John was distraught, and Wayne was stunned by Harold's blatant lies. Wayne knew he had to tell the truth, but he was afraid of the consequences. He struggled with his conscience, wondering if he should confess to John or keep quiet and risk being manipulated by Harold.

That night, Wayne couldn't sleep. As the first ray of sunlight filtered through his window blinds, he made up his mind. He knew what he had to do. He would do the right thing, no matter what the consequences.
