A Meaningful Act of Cleaning

Early this morning, I woke up and checked the clock. Wow! It was almost six o'clock. I quickly got dressed and grabbed my cleaning tools, such as a broom and a dustpan, and headed to the hallway.

It turned out that as part of the assignment given by Jingyan School, we were tasked with doing something meaningful for the people around us or society. When I saw that the hallway in our unit was a bit dirty, I came up with an idea.

Firstly, I took half a bucket of water from home, soaked the cloth, and started wiping from the top of the handrails. The handrails had accumulated a lot of dust, and nobody had taken care of them. I placed the cloth on the handrail and wiped it vigorously. After wiping it once, the cloth was so dirty that it was almost unrecognizable. I then wiped it again with clean water until it was finally clean.

Then, it was time to sweep the floor. I started from the top and worked my way down. I sprinkled some water on the floor and then slowly, gently, and systematically swept with my broom and dustpan. This method helped me clean the floor thoroughly without disturbing my neighbors.

Suddenly, I found some small pieces of paper that I couldn't sweep into the dustpan. I wondered how someone could be so careless and not have any civic responsibility. I then thought of sweeping the rubbish to the side of the stairs and picking it up with the dustpan, which worked out perfectly.

Halfway through sweeping, my back started to ache, and I couldn't straighten up. I wanted to give up, but when I thought of how the sanitation workers worked hard every day of the year, I realized my pain was nothing compared to theirs. So I picked up my confidence again.

Finally, I disposed of all the garbage in the hallway into the trash can. I understood how hard-working the sanitation workers were, and how shameful it was for those who threw their trash on the ground instead of in the bin. The city is our home, and civilization relies on every citizen to maintain it.

When people noticed this clean and fresh scene, I was delighted, and my smile was sweeter than honey.
