The Role of Free Speech in a Society

John Milton’s famous quote highlights the importance of free speech, which is a cherished right of all freedom-loving individuals. The concept of free speech is enshrined in many constitutions worldwide, and some argue that it is a citizen’s birthright. However, before we can establish a case for free speech, it is important to understand what Milton is trying to convey.

Milton believes that being able to advise the public and speak freely is true liberty. However, the question arises as to who is qualified to advise the public. Advice should be sought and given, and the adviser should have knowledge and experience. This is why experienced lawyers and medical professionals are highly valued. Similarly, senior workers who have a thorough understanding of their work are respected.

The poet claims the right to speak freely, but there must be a listener. However, the poet does not necessarily care if they are listened to or not. There is also the risk of the poet leading people astray, which could lead to government intervention. If a poet takes the liberty too far and exposes the mistakes of a ruler or government, it could lead to their imprisonment or exile. The truth is not always palatable, and this is something a writer must be aware of.

Freedom of speech in modern times means the freedom to speak freely of grievances or wrongdoings. This is the view that well-meaning people have of free speech. However, this right cannot be denied in a free society, and it is one of the cornerstones of democracy.

The idea that a poet is born free and must have freedom of speech is a fallacy. One is not born entirely free; in society, we all have responsibilities as well as rights. The freedom of speech cannot always be taken for granted. In the name of free speech, mudslinging often occurs, which can lead to undesirable consequences. However, without absolute freedom of speech, we can still enjoy liberty and appreciate the poetic vision of Milton.

In conclusion, free speech is a fundamental right in a democratic society. However, there are responsibilities that come with this right, and the truth can be hard to swallow at times. We must strive to strike a balance between free speech and responsibility to ensure that our societies continue to thrive.
