The post-World War II era is a period of great excitement and
inspiration in history. It was a time of unprecedented change that transformed
the face of the earth. The aftermath of the war saw the birth of new nations,
advancements in science and technology, and progress in human affairs. The
founding of the UNO was a great achievement, as was man's exploration of space.
However, the unleashing of atomic energy brought danger to humanity. The
dissolution of empires and the end of colonialism was a major change, although a
new form of colonialism under communism emerged.
The world was left gloomy after World War I, with the victorious
nations experiencing economic setbacks, and the vanquished nations, especially
Germany, struggling to recover. The League of Nations was unable to handle the
challenges, leading to Germany under Hitler's rise to power, with a dream of a
German empire. Hitler invaded Poland in 1939, and the world was stunned. Hitler
found partners for his evil acts in Italy under Mussolini and in Japan. By
entering into a pact with the USSR, Germany was temporarily saved from worries
from the East. However, Hitler's invasion of Belgium, Holland, and France
resulted in many reversals. The English withstood the German Blitzkrieg, and
Winston Churchill became the champion premier of England.
Germany's invasion of Russia and Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor
brought the U.S.A. into the war, with the Big Three (Great Britain, the USA, and
the USSR) joining forces against the Axis powers. The Allies' pincer movement
proved successful against the Germans, with Berlin falling in May 1945. The
release of the Atom Bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki led to Japan's surrender, and
the birth of the United Nations, which aimed to establish peace on earth.
The post-World War II era saw many advancements in technology,
including the transistor, the ballpoint pen, Jumbo Jets and supersonic planes,
space flights, and the computer. However, there are areas of conflict that
require wise handling to avoid another world war. |
