It is interesting to note that among all the creatures in
the world, only a handful mate for life. Humans are one such creature, but
even in the case of humans, the idea of marrying and living together
permanently is a recent development, considering that humans have been on
earth for five million years and the institution of marriage is not more
than ten or twenty thousand years old. This suggests that marriage is a
feature of evolution, something that is the result of experimentation and
discovery that this is the best way. Given that marriage is a widespread
institution among peoples all over the world and most often a part of their
religions, it is likely that it is within humans as an instinct - like
walking on two legs.
Marriage has many benefits, especially for the children born of such
marriages. Legitimacy is one such benefit. The laws of most lands
established centuries ago make it clear that only children born in wedlock
have certain rights, such as inheritance rights. Children born out of
wedlock are often stigmatized in most communities. To give their children
good lives, couples must marry. It is not right for anyone to make decisions
for unborn children just because it is convenient for the parties
themselves.
Living together permanently is also the best way. Couples who live together
for life develop a certain closeness and intimacy that is valuable to life,
like a long and lasting friendship. They support each other during difficult
times and nurse each other back to health. They bring out the best in each
other, which is usually not possible in a short-term relationship. They can
share properties and build a family together. Having a home with children
and a family is the best arrangement for us.
Observation shows that this is also what is good for humanity. In a home,
the father and mother share the responsibilities of raising their families.
Children from such homes develop into upright persons. Children from homes
that split up often go through traumatic experiences and are often
disadvantaged. For future generations, therefore, marriage and staying in
the marriage is the best thing to do.
Marriage and permanent relationships between a man and a woman lead to good
lives for the parties involved and for the children born of such marriages.
Moreover, it is also good for society to be organized into families. Such
being the case, it is crucial that people marry and live together
permanently. |
