On Tuesday, historic Alexandria of Virginia will be making some modern history, becoming the first local government to offer free outdoor internet access. But on capital hill, right across the Petaluma, not everyone is thrilled and Joei Chen tells us why. To understand what Wi-Fi is, you may want to ask an expert who is a little younger. -You don’t have to go and find a computer or place plug into all. -You’re connected to nothing. That is you’re connected to everything. That would be everything in the 8 billion or so search pages on the internet. As 21-year-old Will Donovan patiently explains, Wi-Fi uses radio waves to connect to the internet. No more wires sticking out of laptops. No more dial-ups. Just power up into Wi-Fi zone and boom, you are linked to the universe. -It’s Star Trek, yeah. Seeing a tech-revolution on the horizon, Alexandria of Virginia want to give Wi-Fi access to the residents and visitors for free. It’s an opportunity to stimulate the economic development and tourism. The city spent $20,000 on four sets of the unapproved antennas following the leader of 80 communities around the country - places like - Laphia, Louisiana and the city of Philadelphia which are in the process of setting up Wi-Fi networks. That’s really long for telecom companies which see competition in the making. In state after state, and here in Washington, the telecom giants are lobbying hard to keep communities from doing it themselves. They argue that setting up and maintaining Wi-Fi networks isn’t easy, work cheap! It’s questionable to use tax payers dollars; it is a drain on budgets that are already pressed to provide adequate police and fire services and other local services. But users as Will Donovan don’t care much about the politics. He’s just happy to have an inexpensive way to be connected. -This is the micro-wave, this is the refrigerator, this is your pen, you know , this is your cell phone…, this is ... -Stuff we just take for granted… -Yeah. -It already is that, for people who participate in it… And for community leaders in places like this, that is what's all about making it easier for the people who want to be part of the tech revolution to join in.
