America is not the only place where sidewalks are ________. This is the way Japanese men used to suffer through the summer --, suited up no matter what. But this year the word is out to men: take it off., shed the suits and toss the ties.
Even in parliament, prime minister and the country’s law makers have abandoned their vigorous formality for the casual look. Indeed there is even a fashion show to show off, wearing less.
And apartment stores are selling a style called CoolBiz, as in staying cool in the business place. And just make sure men get the message, Japan environment minister is telling companies to ________ on air-conditioning.
—Naturally, people will take off their ties and jackets.
—Right, I certainly do.
But a lot of Japanese men think it is more polite to ________ for business. It’s Kanehisa Ueda told me.
—So you’re willing to suffer being hot because it’s a better look to wear suit?
—Yes. Eh, I will change.
—Someday?
—Yeah, near future.
There is, of course, a serious side to all this. Summer heats settle over Tokyo, making the city what scientists call a heat island. Cutting back an air-conditioning cuts the energy use and that helps in the battle against global warming.
So it’s come to this, wearing a suit in Tokyo makes you feel like you are not doing your part for the environment. And well today, it’s off with coat and tie. Who knows what being cool tomorrow will mean.
Berry Petersen, CBS news, Tokyo.
